Odessa straddles the Pasco and Hillsborough county line and has kept much of its rural character even as Tampa has grown toward it. Along Gunn Highway, SR-54 and the side roads off them, properties are often measured in acres rather than feet: horse farms with board fences, small ranches, wooded homesites set far back from the road and estate homes on the many lakes in the area, including the Lake Keystone area. To the north, the land runs toward the large tract of protected woods around the Starkey Wilderness Preserve, and newer planned communities like Starkey Ranch have brought fresh development along SR-54.
