Living on the Lake Wales Ridge
The Lake Wales Ridge is an ancient line of sand dunes running down the middle of the Florida peninsula, and the city sits near its highest ground. Bok Tower Gardens, built on Iron Mountain just north of town, is the best-known landmark and one of the highest points in peninsular Florida. From there the land falls away in every direction toward lakes, groves and lowland pasture.
That height and that sand shape almost every tree job here. Rain drains quickly, roots run wide and shallow in places, and the native vegetation on undeveloped ridge land is dry, dense scrub that behaves very differently from the wetter woods closer to Tampa.
Scrub, Sand Pine and Dry-Season Fire
Florida scrub, with sand pine, scrub oaks, saw palmetto and rosemary, is adapted to burn. From late winter through May, when rain is scarce and humidity drops, a spark from equipment, a lightning strike or a careless burn pile can move quickly through overgrown lots. Homes built next to unmanaged scrub or old, brushy groves are the most exposed.
Our fire risk reduction work focuses on breaking up that fuel:
- Opening a cleared buffer around homes, barns and fence lines.
- Removing ladder fuels, the low limbs and vines that carry fire into tree crowns.
- Using forestry mulching to grind palmetto and brush into a ground layer instead of leaving tall, dry growth.
- Thinning dense sand pine stands that have grown up around structures.
Ridge scrub is also home to protected wildlife such as gopher tortoises and Florida scrub-jays. On undeveloped parcels, check with the county and state wildlife agencies before clearing; we can talk through what is usually involved.

A Year of Tree Work in Lake Wales
January to May: dry season
This is the best window for mulching, brush clean-up and fuel reduction, and firm sand makes it easy to move equipment across acreage.
May and June: before hurricane season
Pruning dead and overextended limbs on oaks and pines over roofs and driveways reduces storm damage later.
June to October: storms
Afternoon lightning and the occasional tropical system bring split trunks, uprooted laurel oaks and limbs on power drops. We handle removals and cleanup after the weather passes.
Fall: planning season
Many landowners use the cooler months to plan grove removal or clearing for a new home before the next dry season.
Historic Streets, Groves and Lakefronts
Lake Wales has an unusually wide mix of property types for a town its size. Older neighborhoods around downtown and Lake Wailes have tall live oaks, laurel oaks and camphor trees that are often decades old and growing over homes and power lines. Those call for skilled tree trimming from a bucket truck rather than heavy machinery. The area around Mountain Lake and the gardens has large, mature canopy as well.
Outside the city, citrus still lines parts of SR-60 heading east toward Lake Kissimmee, and many old groves are being taken out for housing, cattle or new plantings. There, land clearing and stump work take center stage. Ranch land and lake lots round out the picture, each with their own mix of brush, pines and palms.

Neighborhoods and Roads Around Lake Wales
We work throughout the city and out along the two main highways: US-27 north toward Dundee and south toward Babson Park and Frostproof, and SR-60 west toward Bartow and east into ranch and grove country. Homes near Spook Hill, the Bok Tower area, the lakes on the east side and rural parcels off the county roads are all part of our regular coverage.
Requesting an Estimate in Lake Wales
FTDF Services operates from Tampa and covers about 100 miles around it, and the ridge towns are a regular part of that circle. Scrub and grove work often calls for a tracked machine with a mulching head, a wheel loader and grapple, and a stump grinder; in-town jobs use our bucket truck and hand crews with chainsaws. Ridge customers can book a site visit on any day, weekends included, between 6 AM and 10 PM, and Spanish-speaking owners can talk the job through in their own language.
